Upper Extremity Orthotics –
Shoulder, Elbow, Tennis Elbow, and Wrist
Pain in the shoulder normally arises from its joints and surrounding soft tissue. Traumatic, – and- overuse injuries account for the major cause of pain, displacement, tears or inflammation in either of the three joints that make up the shoulder, yet some conditions may be neuro-muscular in origin and not necessarily painful.
Regardless of the reason for the discomfort, deformity or loss of function, the goals for bracing remains the same; to relieve pain, stabilise and protect.
A soft brace may be required to support the arm following an injury or surgery. This may be due to sport, over use injuries or trauma. The arm sling has two straps, on that wrap around the neck and over the shoulder and the other around the waist. It is available in different sizes and easy to wash and wear.
Paralysis in the shoulder caused by a stroke or injury to the nervous system could cause dislocation or subluxation of the shoulder joint. Displacement of the shoulder can be painful and difficult to move the arm.
Omo neurexa corrects the alignment of the humerus head with the joint socket and therefore alleviates the cause of the pain. It helps stabilise the shoulder and position it correctly again. The Omo Neurexa shoulder orthosis provides noticeable relief and leads to a better overall body posture.
- Shoulder pain / subluxation following a stroke
- Shoulder pain / subluxation following injuries to the Plexus brachialis
Stabilises and limits unintentional movement and used for shoulder irritation conditions and arthritis.
- Acute or chronic shoulder pain
- Degeneration of the rotator cuff
- Tendomyopathies of the shoulder
- Strains of the shoulder muscles
- Minor shoulder instability
- Post-operative support
The Ultra Sling is a contoured semi-rigid cushion designed to eliminate pressure on the ulnar nerve and is set in 15° abduction. The 3-point strapping system evenly distributes weight and takes pressure off the neck. Soft padding and customisable straps provides the wearer with extra comfort.
- Post-operative treatment following rotator cuff repairs and Bankart procedures
- Capsular shifts
- Glenohumeral dislocation and subluxation
- Soft tissue repairs or strains
Tennis Elbow is a term used to describe pain and inflammation at the elbow caused by overuse and repetitive strain. Applying pressure to the tendon and thereby limiting movement helps to alleviate pain and speed up recovery.
The Aircast Pneumatic consists of a soft band and an air-filled pad. The band is slid over the forearm placing the pad on the spot where the tendon meets the bone. Pull the strap to tighten it without constricting circulation.
The Formfit Tennis Elbow Brace is universal splint (left or right) with two pressure pads and adjustable strap to bring instant relief over the affected area. The splint acts as a ‘clamp’ rather than a strap that, when fastened presses on the area without having to tighten the brace too much.
Indications for tennis elbow splints:
- Medial epicondylitis (Golfer’s elbow)
- Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)
Wrist injuries are common and there are many possible causes for wrist joint complaints. Pain may radiate from the hand to the arm or vice versa. In general, it must be noted that these complaints are usually associated with significant impairments in everyday life since the hands fulfil an essential function in most activities of daily life. Orthoses and supports can help alleviate pain and promote healing.
Provides effective long term immobilisation and protection to the injured wrist and thumb. Superior support provided by adjustable radial and palmar stays as well exceptional comfort.
- Gamekeeper’s Thumb
- DeQuervain tendonitis
- Selected scaphoid injuries
- Post cast removal
- Soft tissue injuries
A static thumb splint with a patented wire frame immobilising the thumb in an analgesic position. Due to its slim profile it still maintains the wrists range of motion and combined with its light weight and ventilated fabric means a more comfortable fit for the patient.
- Osteoarthritis of the thumb
- DeQuervains tendonitis
- Soft tissue injuries
A lace closure provides this wrist support with an easy one-pull application. Adjustable palmar stay allows for fine-tuning when needed and the adjustable thumb closure reduces irritation to the patient’s skin.
- Mild to moderate sprains and strains
- Carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress injuries
- Post cast removal
Removable, adjustable (using the exclusive BOA reel and lace dynamic closure system), re-formable and waterproof solution for fractures and other injuries requiring stabilization. The Exos wrist brace is also radiolucent, allowing x-rays to be taken without removing the brace. Due to its significantly lighter weight and variety of colours it make them more attractive and fun to wear especially for children.
- Boxers Fracture
- Radial fracture
- Wrist fractures
- Soft tissue injuries requiring immobilisation
